Parabens
Chemical Preservatives
Studies have suggested that exposure to parabens may disrupt hormonal balance and potentially increase the risk of certain health issues, including skin cancer. For this reason, they are generally considered bad for your health but they also contribute to dry frizzy hair and a dry flaky scalp.
SLES & ALS
ALS and SLES are surfactants added to many beauty products, used to create the foaming action associated with cleansing products
ALS and SLES can be harsh, abrasive, drying and damaging for your hair. They can be irritating to skin, fade hair color, and cause hair to become brittle.
Triclosan
Triclosan is a chemical ingredient added to many different products. The chemical has antibacterial properties that prevent or stop bacterial growth and contamination.
Triclosan is an endocrine-disrupting chemical. That means it can harm your endocrine system, leading to issues with proper hormone function. Some animal studies have shown that exposure to high amounts of the ingredient may cause a decrease in certain thyroid hormones.
EDTA
EDTA acts as a chelator. It “grabs” metal ions that can affect the stability and / or appearance of cosmetic products. EDTA is used to counter the hardness of water in rinse-off products.
The concern regarding EDTA stemming from studies done on animals, have shown broad systemic effects, brain and nervous system effects at low doses, endocrine disruption, and reproductive effects at high doses. Some sites suggest carcinogenic potential stems from its synthesis process, which involves ethylenediamine, formaldehyde (recognized as a carcinogen by the National Cancer Institute), and sodium cyanide (produced from the toxic hydrogen cyanide).
